Wataboku continues to expand its global fan base by sharing works on social media featuring SAI, the girl in a school uniform who serves as the brand’s original icon. The year 2026 marks the 10th anniversary of the artist’s first solo exhibition. This inaugural solo exhibition at the Hanshin Umeda Main Store draws on the experience cultivated over the past decade, returning to the artist’s roots by revisiting past works while presenting a collection that strongly reflects Wataboku’s unique artistic vision. While this solo exhibition will primarily feature hand-drawn works, wataboku will participate in the “Illustrator’s Work Exhibition” held on the same floor of the Hanshin Umeda Main Store with digital works. Don’t miss this opportunity to experience wataboku’s unique worldview from different perspectives. (Planning cooperation: Chignitta)
“Unfinished”
Ten years have passed since I held my first solo exhibition this year.
Over the past decade, I have continued to create works alongside SAI.
What I entrusted to SAI was my former immaturity and the world that was visible only at that time.
Fluctuating emotions, a narrow yet vivid perspective, and unfounded convictions.
I believe these were all landscapes that emerged precisely because I was an unfinished human being in my teens,and they were the radiance born of that very immaturity.
Now that I have become an adult, while I have come to understand that immaturity,
I also realize that I, as an artist, am still unfinished.
Being unfinished as an artist does not simply mean that the work is not yet complete.
It is the time spent continually engaging with my work,
and the vital process of constantly touching upon my own uncertainties and potential.
Being unfinished is not an end;
it is the space that leads to what comes next—it is potential itself.
In a sense, isn’t that the freest and most desirable state of all?
