Chignitta presents the Shigeru Yamada solo exhibition “bright lines” starting Friday, October 17. Inspired by the spirit of Zen, Yamada's works—created after studying art in New York and now based in Okayama—draw viewers into both the artwork and the surrounding space. While his series employs diverse materials and expressive techniques, this exhibition focuses specifically on works centered around “lines.” The opening reception will feature a gallery talk and a curated musical atmosphere complementing the artworks.

“Lines” are scratched, carved, and rise up from there.
In the fall of 2001, I saw Giacometti's paintings at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. In the lines drawn, erased, and layered over and over, I sensed hesitation, obsession, and something like prayer. Even now, over 20 years later, “lines” remain a special presence in my expression.

Shigeru Yamada's works are physical objects, yet they also incorporate elements like the surrounding air and light, the distance from the wall, and the gaze and presence that emerge between the viewer and the piece. His compositions reflect the philosophy of wabi-sabi, treating elusive elements like negative space, silence, and resonance as sculptural forms. In his process, combining different materials creates contrasts and misalignments, giving rise to accidental expressions. Rather than striving for perfection, he deliberately leaves works unfinished, inviting the viewer's imagination. By actively preserving traces of manual labor, he imbues the pieces with an inherent sense of time and physicality.
