“SAME SAME BUT DIFFERENT”

This phrase, encountered during travels around the world, was also used as the title for my solo exhibition ten years ago.

As a turning point to reexamine “what has changed / what remains unchanged,”

I have chosen this title once again for this exhibition.

I hope you will gently sense the feeling of “same yet different” that drifts in the space between ink and white space, between bleeding and smudging.

Sendo

Founder and director of the ink painting group “Hyōboku.” Born in Osaka Prefecture in 1987.

Spent his youth in Gifu Prefecture and currently works based in Kanagawa Prefecture.

Studied ink painting in the tradition of the Maruyama-Shijō school, creating works as a “contemporary ink painter” who expands ink expression into the modern era while maintaining classical techniques as a foundation.

while expanding ink expression into the contemporary as a “modern ink painter.”

Centered on Zen's “Middle Way” philosophy, he explores the gradations, ambiguities, and fluctuations—

the “twilight zone”—that emerge between opposing elements like water and fire, stillness and motion, classical and modern.

Influenced by his father, a photojournalist, he developed an interest in travel and nationalism.

His experiences backpacking around the world while painting ink wash paintings

impart a transnational perspective and narrative quality to his work.
